Media Magazine

  1. The representation of women in the media
February 2010, Jaws vs Alien
  • Women prior to the film Alien were traditionally marginalised and loathed. But films including Alien and Halloween pioneered 'final girl' narratives. This is where women are loved and they are victorious.
  • On the other hand in Jaws, it stereotypical 'carer' or 'screamer'. Men were seen as triumphant and dominant.
December 2010, Endangering Change
  • John Berger, 1970's 'Men act women appear. Men look at women. Women watch themselves being watched.'
  • Bond women. 1962, women were emphasised as sex objects and less important than men.
  • Prop, Women played narrative princess. They need to be saved.
  • Emma Peel 1965-1967, Combination of sexuality, intelligence and combat skills.
April 2015, The Last of Us
  •  Games such as Grand Theft Auto present women as materialist and stupid.
  • In the game 'The Last of Us', the character Tess defies the game lore. She is wearing clothes that are practical. Also, she is established as the alpha character through her commanding other characters.
  • Tess also defies gender expectation as she is both physically and mentally ruthless.
  • She is not sexually objectified, she defies the notion of a patriarchal society.
